Transcript (prepared by Barbara Hong Richardson for our blind classmates):

At the beginning of the video, there is our Preparatory Flag being hung up on a fireplace. Its length is 56 inches and its width is 36 inches. On the top of the white cloth flag, there are block letters in blue saying G A L L A U D E T.

On the center and in the middle there is a brown drawing represent Tower Clock. On the same row, there is > < shaped of the block letters in red saying 1 9 7 1.

Looking at the flag for the directions of extremities: on the right side of the Tower Clock standing is a gray rat with a red nose and black eyes looking toward to the left side with its right arm behind its head; its right foot across its left foot; its left arm resting on its hip and its tail wrapping the number 9 on the left side.

On the bottom there are block letters in blue saying C O L L E G E.There are 2 eyelets on the left side for hanging on a flagpole. There is no motion for at most 8 seconds and then Lynette Waldner wearing a pair of navy blue polo shirt with Gallaudet embroidered on her left side appeared, rolling over from the left side and appeared.

Narrated by Lynette:Hi, I’m Lynette Waldner Cardinale. Those people kept touching our (Lynette’s and Mike’s) shoulders and asked us what happened...what was the story about our Preparatory Flag? They were curious and asked us to tell the story about the Preparatory Flag.

During our preparatory year, we had a wonderful time at Camp Letts. Before that, Mike and I came up with a bright idea: why not make our Prep Flag. Ok, Mike started to draw and we went to the store to buy some fabrics. Then I sewed the appliqués to both sides of the flag. Then we brought the Preparatory Flag to the camp and raised it on a flagpole. (Lynette turned to point where the eyelets are.) The flag waved and waved.

That night or next night we moved the flag to the mess hall where we had the banquet with the VIPs. It was real nice.

Then the next morning we were surprised to see the flag gone! Where was the flag? Where? Where?

Oh that was sad.

Thirty years later we had our class reunion. There Bert Reins made a confession saying, “Know what? I stole the Prep Flag.”Oh, we were so relieved knowing that it was still in existence. Wonderful! Wonderful!

Years and years later Bert Reins moved to Riverside and we moved to Riverside.

Then I asked Bert’s classmate from Idaho School for the Deaf if he had seen the flag and he said yes it was in his garage. Oh yes, it was great. We were relieved.

As I pondered about the 45th anniversary, why not we bring the Preparatory Flag to Gallaudet and show it to our class. When we got the flag, we were amazed at how vibrant colors of blue, gray and brown were.

So after I washed it with great care, we brought it to Gallaudet. After we showed the flag in our banquet room, our classmates were in awe and felt it was wonderful and relieved. We decided to announce to the class that we were going to donate the flag to the Gallaudet Archives. The class said, “No, no” and they wanted us to bring the flag back during our 50thanniversary to have the flag wave during the march around the campus.

Ok, it was fine and we brought the flag back here.

Five years later, oh we will have Zoom. Darn or Shoot. Oh well, that means we will bring the flag back to Gallaudet to give it to the Archives when we can.

Unfortunately we never had pictures taken of us with the flag on the flagpole or in the mess hall or at our 45th anniversary.

But it is most important that the mystery of the missing Preparatory Flag is solved.Bye bye.

Then Lynette rolled out of the screen allowing us a few more time exploring the flag.
