Gallaudet University Class of 1971 50th Anniversary Class Reunion
Virtual Class Meeting, October 25, 2021
The meeting was called to order at 2:13 p.m.
President Lance Fischer welcomed us to the zoom meeting:
1) applauded a great committee to make this virtual 50th class anniversary a successful one. 2) Thanks go to Scott Mosley and Lance Weinrib for monitoring and co-hosting our two-hour zoom meeting. It will be a big challenge to do it in this format.
3) When you use sign language, please introduce yourself and slow down your signing so that the tactile interpreters would be able to do their job for our deaf-blind participants. 4) If you wish to voice, please use the chat mode and type.
5) If you wish to vote, use the chat mode, too.
6) I got many input from some of our class members and I’ll share them in order to cut the time in this meeting.
Attendees: 55 participants
President Lance Fischer’s Report:
1) Do we want to continue our term as officers? Or a liaison between our class and Gallaudet Alumni Relations instead? Do we want an election?
2) We have $5,710 in our treasury. However, we have some unfinished expenses (on reunion expenses). Do we want to keep it in our treasury or close the account? 3) A question came up on the missing stone marker on the campus. A photo of our class marker in 1967 was shown. Should we replant a class tree with a new stone marker? Our tree and stone marker are not there anymore. They were near the Merrill Learning Center. Should we look into if the stone marker is in the Gallaudet University’s storage room? 4) Do we want to plan an in-person reunion in one to two years from now? If so, what kind of reunion and where? We may vote a chair to make plans, etc.
5) Do we want a website or blogspot? John Yeh has been exploring how to improve our blogspot. If a new website may cost money, it may be deducted from our treasury.
Notes from 71’ers: We need to know the whereabouts of our missing stone marker. The Board will ask the Gallaudet if the stone marker is in the storage.
Vice-President Leslie Zinza’s Report:
1) Congratulations to our emeriti medallion club inductees!
2) I would like to continue my term.
3) I like to plan reunions or trips. Yesterday President Cordano announced that Gallaudet Kellogg Conference Center/Hotel is open for business. It is possible that we can have reunion on the campus.
Secretary Katie Setzer’s Report:
1) Our reunion is awesome!
2) I maintain the notebooks on the minutes of 25 years and copies of blogspot (shown). 3) It was a challenge for me to do both secretarial work and maintain the blogspot.
Treasurer Mike Lockhart’s Report:
1) We have $5,710.00 in the treasury. It is my personal account.
2) The bank had changed its name several times and it is currently Wells Fargo. I do not
recommend the bank be changed since there is no fee as long as the account maintains at least $2,000.00
3) I’d like to continue my term.
Notes from 71’ers:
1) Mike Lockhart replied that there was no co-signer in this account.
2) How will the account be protected? Will? POA?
3) Lance Fischer will discuss the matters with Mike Lockhart.
4) Wendy Bachman volunteered to be an auditor.
New Business:
1) Connie Greenlee Gough (seconded) moved that we keep the same officers. PASSED. President Lance announced that Helena Schmitt accepted to be our communication coordinator.
2) Michael Hummel (seconded) moved that we donate $2,000 toward the Class of 1971 Scholarship fund. FAILED.
3) Leslie Zinza (seconded) moved that we keep all $5,710.00 in our treasury. PASSED. 4) Jane Kuzoian (seconded) moved that we have a committee to prepare a survey on reunion site. PASSED.
Suggestions for sites are: Taos, NM; New England/Canada cruise; a resort for relaxation or activities; two-day cruise from FL to Bahamas, etc.
5) Laura Wade Sweeney (seconded) to set up a committee of three or four how to investigate on how to preserve our class history with Archives on our 50th anniversary virtual programs.
6) Barbara Hong Richardson (seconded) amended that we pick a chair for this committee. Kathleen Russell Setzer accepted to be the chair with John Yeh’s assistance and support. PASSED.
Notes:
Kathleen explained that John Yeh discussed with her on how to improve our blogspot (a new class website) He also shared his discussion with Thomas Benziger, Linda C. Tom, and Helena Schmitt. They are very supportive.
