Hello everyone. I am Lance Fischer, Class of ’71 Alumni President. I have been getting many comments in response to Barbara Mitchel Morrison’s email message – disappointed re Gallaudet not having homecoming for this year.

Our 50thanniversary celebration will be a virtual reunion – not what we really wanted. Barbara suggested ours be off-campus on the same weekend.  Many comments showed “yes” and many different suggestions. And I read all of them.

I feel it is my duty as your class president to respond to all comments. I certainly understand your feeling, emotion, and disappointment.  It is the same with me.  Who is happy? No one.  I know none of us are happy that there won’t be a homecoming weekend. I know that but we have to accept it.  With the coronavirus issue, Gallaudet is protecting the staff, faculty, employees, and students.

So, we cannot enter the campus – Gallaudet won’t let the visitors on the campus.  Now, why not have it the same time as the homecoming weekend.  It is impossible, hard to make big plans in a short time. We’d have to look for hotels, contracts, negotiations.  We have to check how many people are going and do the booking.  It is too much work in a short time.  So, let us accept the virtual homecoming for now.

It is not the end of the world. We still can get together at another time. I think you gave some wonderful ideas. I think the trip and tours may be too much for some people.  I think maybe a long weekend somewhere in the U.S. and staying at the same place that has a pool and several activities where we can get together socially and spend time together rather than going out on tours and so on that may be too much or expensive. One made a suggestion – why not have a reunion at the DSA 2023 conference in Hollywood, Florida.  Why not?

There are many wonderful ideas.  We should look into these possibilities. If you have an idea – I do not want an idea but a plan such as date, where, cost.  Let me know please. Our board will discuss the possible reunion. We will move on with your suggestions.

Don’t be disappointed. Think positive.  We can still find ways to get together.

“ILY” to you all. I cherish the Class of 1971 as always.  “ILY” bye.
